Words Easily Confused

Watch out for words that are easily confused for each other, such as the following:


    • amount for quantity

    • anticipate for expect

    • anxious for eager

    • baited for bated

    • compulsion for compunction

    • continuous for continual

    • disinterested for uninterested

    • enervate for stimulate

    • fortuitous for fortunate

    • fulsome for full

    • historic for historical

    • inflammable for not flammable

    • ironic for coincidental

    • legacy for inheritance

    • noisome for noisy

    • partly for partially

    • practicable for practical

    • torturous for tortuous

    • and substituting preceding, previous, and prior for each other incorrectly.
